Norwegian Wood, a design and build project I did at a retreat space north of San Francisco. The concept behind Norwegian Wood, named in honor of the Beatles song, was to build a small dwelling on the property that felt, in the owner’s words, “separate but connected”. A place for him or someone else to stay on property, and take retreat from the events happening in the main house. The main house, designed by Daniel Liebermann in 1962, is a true work of architectural craft brilliantly utilizing the natural environment, showcasing his signature dramatic modern-organic lines with a beautifully executed reclaimed rustic undertone modeled after a Native American teepee. As I contemplated design concepts I quickly realized that the highest respect to Liebermann’s work was to choose not to compete with his aesthetic. The finished product pulls elements of Liebermann design language across into the new unit, while creating a different look and feel that also flows seamlessly into the redwood grove.
